Reopening Guidance for Cleaning and Disinfecting

Additional Information

Reducing the risk of exposure to COVID-19 by cleaning and disinfection is an important part of reopening public spaces that will require careful planning. Every American has been called upon to slow the spread of the virus through social distancing and prevention hygiene, such as frequently washing your hands and wearing masks. Everyone also has a role in making sure our communities are as safe as possible to reopen and remain open.

The virus that causes COVID-19 can be killed if you use the right products. EPA has compiled a list of disinfectant products that can be used against COVID-19, including ready-to-use sprays, concentrates, and wipes. Each product has been shown to be effective against viruses that are harder to kill than viruses like the one that causes COVID-19.

This document provides a general framework for cleaning and disinfection practices. The framework is based on doing the following:

  1. Normal routine cleaning with soap and water will decrease how much of the virus is on surfaces and objects, which reduces the risk of exposure.
  2. Disinfection using EPA-approved disinfectants against COVID-19 external icon can also help reduce the risk.  Frequent disinfection of surfaces and objects touched by multiple people is important.
  3. When EPA-approved disinfectants external icon are not available, alternative disinfectants can be used (for example, 1/3 cup of 5.25%–8.25% bleach added to 1 gallon of water, or 70% alcohol solutions). Do not mix bleach or other cleaning and disinfection products together. This can cause fumes that may be very dangerous to breathe in. Bleach solutions will be effective for disinfection up to 24 hours. Keep all disinfectants out of the reach of children.

Center for Disease Control: Coronavirus

The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic is a pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China in December 2019. wikipedia.org

  • Disease: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)
  • Virus strain: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)
  • First case: December 1, 2019
  • Origin: Wuhan, Hubei, China
  • Symptoms: Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19: Cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell.
  • Incubation period: 1-14 days
  • Mode of transmission: Human-to-human transmission via respiratory droplets
  • Prevention tips: Avoiding close contact with sick individuals; frequently washing hands with soap and water; not touching the eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands; and practicing good respiratory hygiene

How Does YCS Unique C³ Process Clean System Work?

C³ Process: Clean, Counter, Contain™

Using its unique C³ Process: Clean, Counter, Contain™, YCS provides specialty and rapid cleaning and facility services to a variety of institutional, business and non-profit facilities.

STEP # 1 - CLEAN

Only the highest quality cleaning supplies and equipment are used in each call-out. Team members are specially selected for their dependability, commitment and ability. They receive state-of-the-art training conducted by experienced the YCS management, and each YCS team member has an Area of Responsibility (AOR). The instant they make entry into a facility, each member immediately covers his or her AOR. This strategy is planned and practiced in the preliminary trainings, so successful results are produced fast and efficiently.

STEP # 2 - COUNTER

The underlying cause of the rapid is examined and measures are recommended to reduce or eliminate the threat of persistent damages or problems.

STEP # 3 - CONTAIN

Once the outcome is accomplished every call-out is subject to a review and evaluation. The goal is to identify the causes of the emergency to ensure that there is minimal likelihood of a reoccurrence. The team also discusses accomplishments and challenges, and they use that information to refine trainings or ensure even smoother processes for future call-outs. In addition, the YCS Quality Assurance Program helps customers be proactive, too. Sign up and invite us out for a visit in advance. There is no cost or obligation. Then, the YCS team, when an emergency occurs, will know the location and access points, be prepared with the appropriate equipment and supplies, and have the authorization to enter the premises. Customers will know the costs and save valuable time when it counts.

Although the EPA continues to study electrostatic spraying of disinfectants, there is evidence that electrostatic spraying is an effective method of disinfection, especially for hard to reach areas or remote surfaces that may not have been disinfected through manual processes. This technology, as part of an overall cleaning and disinfection program, can help create a safe and healthy environment while decreasing the risk of cross-contamination.
